Ightham Mote is a very well preserved moated manor house built in the mid-14th century, one of the oldest to survive in England. Building started in the 1340s, and has been altered and extended in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. It is surrounded by a square moat some 150 feet long by 30 feet wide. In the mid-16th century an outer courtyard to the west of the house was enclosed by ranges of stables, accomodation and a gatehouse.
