In 1449 June 26, Robert Botyll, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England was granted, by Henry VI, (In year 26 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Aycle (Eagle Preceptory)

The wording of this licence is;

"By the petition of Robert Botyll, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, ...and has further granted the said prior licence to embattle, crenellate, and machiolate the manor of Aycle and so hold it to him and his successors without impediment, and to impark 600 acres of of wood and 4000 acres of pasture of demesnes in Aycle, and so hold them to him and his successors ..."

Granted at Winchester, by privy seal and of the said date etc. {by authority of parliament}.
