In 1385, was supposedly granted, by Richard II, a Royal licence to crenellate (Embleton Tower)

Although this document has been considered by some as a licence to crenellate the current opinion rejects this as a licence to crenellate.


A licence to crenellate was allegedly given to the owner in 1385 but no official record exists for this. The parish was laid waste by the Scots in 1385 and the tower was added to an existing building in about 1395. A completely unsupported claim for a fairly common type of building rarely licenced.
