In 1382 Aug 6, Abbas et Conventus de Thornton was granted, by Richard II, (In year 6 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Abbatia de Thornton (Thornton Abbey)

"quandam novam donum desuper et juxta portam Abbatiae suae de Thornton muro [the new house over and about the gate]"

Granted at Woodstock, by privy seal.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation.
