In 1332 Oct 22, Johannes de Mereworth (ad requisitionem delecti et fidelis Willielmi de Clynton) was granted, by Edward III, (In year 6 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Cheriton (Cheriton)

"Licence, at the request of William de Clynton, for John de Mereworth to crenellate his manor (manerium) of Mereworth, and a chamber within his manor of (quandam cameram suam infra manerium suum de) Cheriton, co. Kent."

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation.
