In 1318 May 9, Henricus de Wylyngton was granted, by Edward II, (In year 11 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Culverden [Culverton] (Willington Court)

"Licence for Henry de Wylyngton to crcncllato his dwelling place (mansum) of Culvcrdcn, co. Gloucester."

Granted at Windsor, by King, on the information of Master Thomas dc Cherleton.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation.
