In 1308 March 11, Johannes de Benstede, clericus was granted, by Edward II, (In year 1 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Eye, juxta Westmonaster. quod vocatur Rosemont (Eye next to Westminster)

"Licence for John de Benstede to crenellate his dwelling-house (mansum suum) called 'Rosemont' at Eye near Westminster, co. Middlesex."

Sir John de Benstede was a prominent member of the English royal household in the late C13 and early C14. He was Prebendary of Sandiacre from 3 February 1297 until, presumably, 1308, when he married. He was also Secretary of State, and he served variously as Keeper of the Great Seal, Keeper of the Wardrobe (for Edward I), and as a royal judge from 1309 onwards.
