In 1301 Feb 2, Johannes de Hastings (John, Lord Hastings) was granted, by Edward I, (In year 29 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Filungeleye (Fillongley Castle Yard)

"Licence, for John de Hastinges to crenellate his manor and town of Filungeleye, (manerium suum et villam) co. Warwick."

Granted at Nettleham, by King.

Licence to crenellate the manor and town. Granted a weekly market and annual fair at same time. Called a municipal licence by Coulson and since does include the term town this is 'strictly' correct, in practice the licence can only have ever have applied to the manor house.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms.)
