In 1231 May 21, Roberto de Tatteshal was granted, by Henry III, (In year 15 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Tateshal (Tattershall Castle)

The wording of this licence is;

"Pro Roberto de Tatteshal.—Rex concessit Roberto de Tatteshal quod libere et sine inpedimento unam domum de petra et calce firmari faciat apud manerium suum de Tateshal. In cujus etc.Teste rege, apud Hereford, xxj die Maii.
freely and without hindrance to have fortified at his manor of Tattershall a house of stone and lime"
