In 1200, William Briwerr (William Briwere; William Brewer) was possibly granted, by John, a Royal licence to crenellate Stoke (Stokebridge)

The wording of this licence is;

"King writes "to build (firmare) inter alia a castle in Hampshire 'scilicet apud Esleg'sive apud Stoke'."

There is insufficient evidence to be certain about this possible licence to crenellate.


King writes "a multiple licence granted to William Briwerr to build (firmare) inter alia a castle in Hampshire 'scilicet apud Esleg'sive apud Stoke'. The places are identified as Ashley and Stockbridge; no castle is known near the latter." This reads to me as Ashley by Stoke, identifiy one site and I am unclear as to why King seems to imply two sites.
