Gate Castle, Stanhope
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Gaitte; Gates
In the civil parish of Stanhope.
In the historic county of Durham; County Palatinate of (Modern Authority of Durham, 1974 county of County Durham).
SMR report reads "The remains form a rectangle 17m east-west x 7m north-south. The north, east and west walls are of coursed rubble masonry and stand to a maximum height of 1.4m and are spread to a width of 2m. The south wall is visible as a grass-covered bank 1m wide x 0.2m high. No entrance is visible. Abutting the remains are the foundations of a possible wing projecting to the south, measuring 9m x 5m, making the building L-shaped in plan." but it seems, from Jackson, that this is a late C19 description of the remains and that the site was entirely demolished about 1900. No remains obvious on aerial photos. Described as southern gate of medieval deerpark. I'm not sure if there is any evidence this was fortified or if this gatehouse is being confused with the nearby Westgate castle, the park to which it is the gatehouse of.
