Castle Hill, Town Kelloe

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Quarrington

In the civil parish of Kelloe.
In the historic county of Durham; County Palatinate of (Modern Authority of Durham, 1974 county of County Durham).

King writes in a listed headed 'There may have been a castle at: ... moated works'. Castle hill is shown on the 1861 OS map at west end of Town Kelloe, which looks like a small planned town with at least 8 burgage plots on the south side of the road. Kelloe Hall is on the north side of the road and could also be the position of a possible castle (The hall's garden is a motte sized circle. Is hall in bailey?). The name Town certainly implies an attempt at urban foundation presumable in C12 and with possible high status site.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Uncertain remains.
