Lowther Hall

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Lowther Castle

In the civil parish of Lowther.
In the historic county of Westmorland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Medieval manor house dating from 1272-1307. Had tower of about 1350,at least one other, later, tower and a hall. The house was rebuilt between 1628-1664 but partly demolished in 1692 when a new building was erected. The house was partly destroyed by fire in 1718 and had additions carried out in 1802. The present house was constructed 1806-14, slightly north of the manor house, but was not completed. It incorporates C17 wings and the 1802 additions. The house was closed in 1935, and gutted in 1957. Lowther Castle is the C19 building, Lowther Hall is the older building.
