Irthington; The Nook
In the civil parish of Irthington.
In the historic county of Cumberland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).
Earthwork remains of a Medieval motte measuring 96ft by 75ft with a tower at the south angle. There is no visible sign of a bailey, but this was supposed to be to south east. Motte probably built in 1160's by Hubert de Vaux or his son Robert. Tower probably mid C13. A Mediaeval manor house which was probably adjacent to the motte, was demolished prior to 1603. Farmhouse called the Nook in the bailey where there are reports of building foundations, Farm itself probably built with reused stone. Castle attributed to De Vallibus, abandoned for Naworth.
