Hayton Castle Hill

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Heton

In the civil parish of Hayton.
In the historic county of Cumberland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Earthwork remains of a Medieval motte or ringwork, no visible remains of a bailey. It is a natural hillock artificially scarped into a mound 30m in diameter and between 3.5m in height in the west, decreasing to between 2 and 2.5m in the east. The interior is now slightly dished as the result of landscape gardening.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Earthworks remains.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.
