Sheringham and Cromer Cliff defences

In the civil parish of Sheringham.
In the historic county of Norfolk (Modern Authority of Norfolk, 1974 county of Norfolk).

a document of c1588 ordered "The clyfts at Sheringham and Cromer to be cut sloping and passage downe to ye water uppon occasio to be mured [walled or blocked] upp and a parapet to be made upon ye topp. The oulde heith [wharf] to be intrenched to impeach the coming of ye enemy there" as defensive works against the Spanish Armada. This is a several mile stretch of low cliffs so the work involved was quite considerable and may well not have taken place. I presume the old wharf was at Cromer.
