Westbury Manor

In the civil parish of Marsh Gibbon.
In the historic county of Buckinghamshire (Modern Authority of Buckinghamshire, 1974 county of Buckinghamshire).

C17 house on moated site. Possible site for 'mansum' granted, in 1322, licence to crenellate to Robert Lewer. The licence places the house in 'Sutht' [Southampton]. Parker footnotes "Southampton probably an error in the Roll, for Wiltshire." Emery locates this licence at East Meon, Hamsphire. However, supposedly in 1327, Margery Lewer brought an action against Ralph de Camoys to recover her late husband's Manor of Westbury, Bucks, which she pleaded had been unjustly seized by him after her husband's attainder in the previous reign. Ralph produced in defence a charter of Edward II, dated 1324, granting Westbury to him and his wife Elizabeth with remainder to their sons Hugh, but Margery having proved that he had obtained unjust possession of Westbury long before that date, judgement was given in her favour. The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Earthworks remains.

A Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1322 Jan 22.
