Hankwell Farmhouse, Stamfordham

In the civil parish of Stamfordham.
In the historic county of Northumberland (Modern Authority of Northumberland, 1974 county of Northumberland).

C17 with early C19 additions. Random rubble with Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys. 3-bay house extended by inclusion of 2-bay former cottage to right and 2-bay outbuilding to left. Original house: C20 glazed door in C17 chamfered alternating-block surround with hoodmould. Flanking C20 tripartite sashes under C17 hoodmoulds. 12-pane sashes above. Large stone above door, probably doorstep of 1st floor doorway and possible indication that the house was bastle-derivative type. Flanking sections have similar windows. Gabled roof with banded ridge and end stacks. Walls c.3 ft. thick.

This site has been described as a;
Bastle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Masonry ruins/remnants remains.
