Castle Carrock Castle

In the civil parish of Castle Carrock.
In the historic county of Cumberland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Moated enclosure, possible site of a fortified Manor House. Earthworks of a possible fishppond nearby. In 1160's Gamel de Castlecarrock had his seat either here or at nearby Jacobs Hill (qv). The family became extinct late in reign of Edward I. Renn writes this site is natural and castle was probably on fell top, presumably at Jacobs Hill. My belief would be that the Gamel took his name from the presumably early C12 castle at Jacobs Hill and at some point in C13 the family moved from the inconvient site on the fell down to the moated site.

This site has been described as a;
Fortified Manor House.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Earthworks remains.
