Cartmel Castle Meadows

In the civil parish of Lower Allithwaite.
In the historic county of Lancashire (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Alleged site of a castle. No further evidence. The given site is unlikely for a castle, in my opinion, but might be part of the demense of the manor house which could possibly have been a small castle. The giving of the manor to William Marshell in 1185 and his foundation of a prioty here in 1188 suggests this was a manor of some wealth and status of the sort which may well have had a small timber castle. This manor house, of whatever form, and the original parish church would presumably have been lost under the original and later Priory buildings, since the priory also held the manor after it was founded and the manor house would have then been defunct.

This site has been described as a;
Uncertain.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Nothing visible remains.
