Kempsey Village Banks

In the civil parish of Kempsey.
In the historic county of Worcestershire (Modern Authority of Worcestershire, 1974 county of Hereford and Worcester).

King writes village is embanked. Creighton and Higham write 'Kemsey is a rare example of an enclosed medieval village without a castle.' They given no specific reference and I presume they are quoting King. Such embankments that I can see on the map appears to be flood defence with regard to the River Severn. In lieu of any support reference I assess the embankments as doubtful with regard to them being fortifications. With regard to Kemsey being without a castle it did have a bishops palace (qv) a building of equal status and similar function. The manor did also have a deer park and it is also possible the embankments are a park pale.

This site has been described as a;
Urban Defence.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Earthworks remains.
