Reigate Castle
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Holmesdale
In the civil parish of Reigate.
In the historic county of Surrey (Modern Authority of Surrey, 1974 county of Surrey).
Castle, established in 1088, fortified in the late C14, described as `ruinous' by 1441, slighted in 1648. A mock medieval gateway was built on the site in 1777 using stone from the castle. Inner bailey earthworks and traces of the moat can be seen.
This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle
Masonry Castle.
