Lichfield City Defences
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Bachunneswich Gate; Culstubbe Gate; Sandford Gate; Tamworth Gate; Stowe Castle
In the civil parish of Lichfield.
In the historic county of Staffordshire (Modern Authority of Staffordshire, 1974 county of Staffordshire).
Bishop Roger de Clinton (1129-48) made a defensive ditch round Lichfield. There is evidence that George Lane is on the line as it was still known as Castle Ditch in mid C15. The course on the SE is shown on a plan of 1350. Milley's Hospital is built in the ditch. No visible remains. PastScape also reports five C12 town gates.
