Cannock Castle Ring
In the civil parish of Cannock Wood.
In the historic county of Staffordshire (Modern Authority of Staffordshire, 1974 county of Staffordshire).
The earthworks and excavated remains of a small medieval hunting lodge situated within the north west enclosure of Castle Ring hillfort; possibly the site of a royal hunting lodge used by William II and Henry I but probably abandoned early in reign of Henry II who built a new lodge at Radmore (qv). The sandstone foundations of the building is rectangular in plan measuring 20.6m by 11.5m. Possibly the castle of Cannock mentioned, as there being records of a castle, in 1851.
