Aikton Castle, Great Salkeld

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Little Salkeld

In the civil parish of Great Salkeld.
In the historic county of Cumberland (Modern Authority of Cumbria, 1974 county of Cumbria).

Earthworks, foundations and collapsed walls, named as `Aikton Castle' in a documentary source of 1794. The remains are imperfectly surveyed. Dismissed by Jackson. Called vanished moat by Salter. In Mannix & Whellan, History, Gazetteer and Directory of Cumberland, 1847 it is described as 'a fortified station, called Aikton castle, formed of rough stones, without mortar'. To me this site appears to be the center of a medieval field pattern and I wonder if this site is actually a DMV, either with or without a castle or moated manor.

This site has been described as a;
Uncertain.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Masonry footings remains.
