Black Cleugh Bastle(s)

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Blackcleugh

In the civil parish of Plenmeller with Whitfield.
In the historic county of Northumberland (Modern Authority of Northumberland, 1974 county of Northumberland).

This remote bastle stands 1km south of Shankfoot on the south side of the South Tyne Valley. At one time there was a larger settlement and ruins and foundations stand to the east and west of the main building. The bastle was probably one of a pair and has thick walls. In the west end is a gun loop set into the wall.

This site has been described as a;
Bastle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Uncertain remains.
