Brig Bastle

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; The Brigg

In the civil parish of Corsenside.
In the historic county of Northumberland (Modern Authority of Northumberland, 1974 county of Northumberland).

This bastle dates to the late C16 or early C17 and is built of characteristically large irregular stone blocks. It has a massive plinth made of boulders around its base. The bastle measures about 12m by 7m and has walls about 1.1m thick. The upper parts of the wall were rebuilt in C18 and few original features are visible on the outside of the building. The bastle now forms part of a C19 farmhouse.

The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Masonry ruins/remnants remains.


This site is a Grade 2 listed building protected by law*. (Images of England number 239437)
