Yafforth Howe Hill

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Jaford

In the civil parish of Yafforth.
In the historic county of Yorkshire North Riding (Modern Authority of North Yorkshire, 1974 county of North Yorkshire).

C12 motte, probably built during the reign of King Stephen. The motte is in the form of an artificial flat topped mound built on top of natural knoll surviving as an earthwork. It is 65m in diameter at the base and 25m at the top, it stands 4.5m above the level of the knoll. It is surrounded by a ditch with an outerscarp bank with an entrance on the north side. It was disused by 1198.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Earthworks remains.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.
