Middleham Williams Hill
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Sunskew Park
In the civil parish of Middleham.
In the historic county of Yorkshire North Riding (Modern Authority of North Yorkshire, 1974 county of North Yorkshire).
The remains of a large Ringwork and bailey castle built during the reign of William Rufus(c 1086 AD) and superseded by the late Norman castle soon after 1180 AD. The summit of the motte is about 160ft by 115ft and it is 40ft in height. It is defended by a ditch 20ft wide with counterscarp banks 9ft deep. A platform on the north west end of the motte may be the site of a wooden tower. The site of a small bailey to the south east is disputed.
This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
