Oldcastle Castle Hill

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Old Castle

In the civil parish of Oldcastle.
In the historic county of Cheshire (Modern Authority of Cheshire, 1974 county of Cheshire).

Motte and an associated ditch system surviving as earthworks was discovered during tree felling in 1957. The earthwork consisted of a small platform 128ft by 25ft defended on the north by two deep transverse ditches, and on the south by three similar ditches. Excavations, in 1957, consisting of trial section only discovered no finds but a possible hearth sealed beneath a layer of stones. C11 or early C12 date has been suggested for the Motte.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Earthworks remains.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.
