Tateshall

In the historic county of Norfolk (Modern Authority of Norfolk, 1974 county of Norfolk).

Nothing known of possible castle mentioned by Harvey. No Tateshall, Tates or Tate placenames in OS gazetteer for Norfolk. The De Tateshall's were a noble family with wide holdings in East England including Norfolk. The name seems to originate before the Conquest and they gave their name to Tattershall in Lincoln and in Yorkshire. Tateshall was also the name of the manor in which Pontefract Castle (qv) stood. There is a village called Tittleshall with a large moat at TF895215 and the manor of Tivetshall north of Diss which has several moated site the largest of which is Bunnetts Moat at TM159866, however I believe that this a mislocated reference by Harvey to another know site, possibly Pontefract or Tattershall.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Uncertain remains.
