Great Yarmouth coastal defences

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; St Nicholas Gat; South Mount

In the civil parish of Great Yarmouth.
In the historic county of Norfolk (Modern Authority of Norfolk, 1974 county of Norfolk).

Several 'bulwarkes of earth' built in 1539 along beach from mouth of the Yare (St Nicholas's Gat) to the town. One of these may have been the base for the South Mount, a rectangular mound erected in 1590 at the South-west corner of the town wall, between the South Gate and the River Yare, to cover the southern approach to the town and the boom over the river. It mounted 7 heavy guns on its summit. This was removed in C19.

This site has been described as a;
Artillery Fort.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Nothing visible remains.
