Great Ilford Lavender Mount
Also known as, or recorded in historical
documents as; Uphall Camp
In the civil parish of Redbridge.
In the historic county of Essex (Modern Authority of London Borough of Redbridge, 1974 county of Greater London).
Small mount, perhaps remains of motte. Salter suggests adjoining enclosure is a village defence. PastScape record reads "Site of an Iron Age hillfort, Roman settlement and C16 beacon mound, now covered by modern buildings. Excavation uncovered evidence for late Bronze Age or early Iron Age occupation, the palisaded entrance of the hillfort and Roman huts." The 1875 Os map calls the surrounding site 'Camp Remains and site of', this site has, to my eyes, the classic playing card shape of the Roman fort. Lavender Hill is a mound in one corner of this camp. This site overlooks the river, not currently a crossing point but was one in 1875 and possibly before.
This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle
Urban Defence.
The confidence
that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Cropmarks/slight earthworks remains.
