Legsby; The Mount

In the civil parish of Legsby.
In the historic county of Lincolnshire (Modern Authority of Lincolnshire, 1974 county of Lincolnshire).

Windmill mound, situated 670m south of Bleasby Grange, and thought to represent the site of the medieval Bleasby Mill. Though Bleasby Mill is referred to in documents dating to the mid-C13, it appears that the site was already in existence in C12 when the adjacent road layout was established. It is believed that this may indicate reuse of an earlier feature. The mound is circular in plan, rounded in profile and approximately 20m in diameter and up to 2.4m high. A shallow pit lies in the centre of the mound, now much infilled. The mound is surrounded by a dry ditch, up to 5m wide and now between 0.5m and 1m deep. There is a causeway on the southern side. The ditch is in turn surrounded by an outer bank, around 5m wide and about 0.3m high. Called a small motte by King. Bleasby Grange is the manorial centre. What the earlier feature was is unclear but unlikely, in my view, to have been a motte. The medieval manorial centre appears to have been at Bleasby House (TF130848)
