Up Holland

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Upholland; Holland; Holand

In the civil parish of Up Holland.
In the historic county of Lancashire (Modern Authority of Lancashire, 1974 county of Lancashire).

Licence to crenellate granted in1308 to Robert Holand, may have resulted in a castle or other fortified house. Exact location lost. C14 priory church (later parish church) is at SD523051 this was founded by Sir Robert Holland 1307-10. It is likely that the site of Sir Roberts crenellated house, if built, would be near to the priory. On the 1849 map Hall Green is a hamlet centred around the crossroads at SD519053 (The modern map makes it look like the name of a modern estate further to the east) and this appears to a reasonable possible location.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Nothing visible remains.

A Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1308 March 24.

The Ordnance Survey Map Grid Reference is SD519053
