Woodnesborough; The Mount

In the civil parish of Woodnesborough.
In the historic county of Kent (Modern Authority of Kent, 1974 county of Kent).

King writes 'Vanished mound identified as a motte.' PastScape records this site as 'Mound, probably a 6th century barrow containing Saxon inhumations with grave goods including brooch, spearhead, Roman pottery and a 6th century glass vessel.' The identification as a motte was made by Clarke and, I presume that King was unable to locate the Motte and didn't associate it with, or known of, this Saxon (surely Jute) barrow. The barrow site was in the village close to the church. There is a square moat 300m west which was clearly a manorial centre but it is difficult, without knowning the details of the 'excavation' of the barrow, to entirely dismiss this site as a possible earlier manorial centre and motte reusing an existing mound.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Nothing visible remains.
