Bygrave House

In the civil parish of Bygrave.
In the historic county of Hertfordshire (Modern Authority of Hertfordshire, 1974 county of Hertfordshire).

Moated work of considerable size licensed 1386 to Sir John Thornbury, possible castle. PastScape records as Medieval manorial complex and ?associated gardens. The lack of castle name might mean that this site was just a manor house, but it is a large and high status site so is unlikely not to have had some level of fortification, but the size and layout of the earthworks do not suggest serious fortification of castle like quality.

This site has been described as a;
Masonry Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Earthworks remains.

A Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1386 Oct 31.
