Mortimers Castle, Much Marcle

In the civil parish of Much Marcle.
In the historic county of Herefordshire (Modern Authority of Herefordshire, 1974 county of Hereford and Worcester).

Earthwork remains of a Motte and bailey castle, first mentioned in 1153. The motte is 170ft in diameter at the base and is 21.5ft above the bottom of the surrounding ditch. The inner bailey lies to the east and has been considerably altered by the formation of gardens. It has an outer ditch of semi-circular form. Castle had masonry. Probably destroyed in C15 when masonry reputedly used to build church tower. DMV to north of castle.
