Chickward Mound 2

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Chirkward 2

In the civil parish of Huntington.
In the historic county of Herefordshire (Modern Authority of Herefordshire, 1974 county of Hereford and Worcester).

Series of irregular earthworks including a circular mound of about 1m high. Possibly a house platform or motte. Members of the archaeology section of the Woolhope Club visited the site on 05/05/91. The site consists of a roughly circular mound, which is only slightly higher than the surrounding ground. There is a ditch surrounding the mound to the west, north and east that appears to be silted up. There appears to be a triangular enclosure to the west and a possible larger enclosure to the north. It looks like a possible low level house site common to the Eardisley Lordship estates. Domeday does record two landowners in Chirckward (see http://www.smr.herefordshire.gov.uk/db.php?smr_no=24383 )

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Questionable.
Cropmarks/slight earthworks remains.
