Pinsley Motte, Southwick and Widley

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Portsdown; Port Down

In the civil parish of Southwick and Widley.
In the historic county of Hampshire (Modern Authority of Hampshire, 1974 county of Hampshire).

Earthwork remains of a castle mound and bailey. The mound in the north east corner of the bailey, is about 20yds in diameter and rises 3ft above the remains of the level area on the south east side. It is completely surrounded by a ditch which measures 30 to 40ft from lip to lip and 13ft below the level of the mound. The bailey bank rises 5ft above the area and 10ft above the bottom of the ditch. Now almost obliterated by widening of A333 road.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Certain.
Cropmarks/slight earthworks remains.
