Barton Castle, Wield

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Barton Copse

In the civil parish of Wield.
In the historic county of Hampshire (Modern Authority of Hampshire, 1974 county of Hampshire).

Roughly 50yds square enclosure defined by a 2 foot high bank and slight ditch, which may be the site of a motte and bailey. Close to right of way between Wield Church and Godsfield. Well defined walls of tooled clunch remain, suggesting date coeval with church. It is probably of mid C12 date. Not considered a motte by Williams-Freeman. Isolated from settlement and not in a good tactical position
