English Bicknor Castle
In the civil parish of English Bicknor.
In the historic county of Gloucestershire (Modern Authority of Gloucestershire, 1974 county of Gloucestershire).
C11 motte and bailey castle with an inner and outer bailey each surrounded by a ditch mentioned in 1190 and 1217. The motte measures 40 by 50m with a flat top 30 by 20m and stand 4m high. A map of 1608 seems to show a concentric square keep surrounded by a circular moat on the site of the castle south of the church. On the ground the site is clearly a motte and bailey castle with the church in an outer earthen bailey. Uncontrolled excavations discovered a small building.
