Rowley Hill, Sturmer

In the civil parish of Sturmer.
In the historic county of Essex (Modern Authority of Essex, 1974 county of Essex).

King writes "Large mound, possible motte". PastScape report as "A Bronze Age bowl barrow was recorded as being in fairly good condition during field investigation in 1950. Two thick fragments of possible Roman brick were found by the barrow, although no other finds were recovered in the vicinity.". Area excavated in 1994-95 and found evidence of non continous occupation from Late Iron Age until C13. About 300m from church but does not appear to be manorial centre. Recorded by King (and Salter) as in Suffolk but definately in Essex although close to boundary.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Earthworks remains.

This site is a scheduled monument protected by law.
