Chipping Ongar Town Defences
In the civil parish of Ongar.
In the historic county of Essex (Modern Authority of Essex, 1974 county of Essex).
Traces of large enclosure probably indicate a planned Norman town which failed to take. The large enclosure has been tentatively interpreted as Saxon and the castle as overlaying this but with a large outer bailey containing the town.
This site has been described as a;
Urban Defence.
The confidence
that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Cropmarks/slight earthworks remains.
