Hartfield Motte

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Hartfield Castle Field

In the civil parish of Hartfield.
In the historic county of Sussex (Modern Authority of East Sussex, 1974 county of East Sussex).

Motte and bailey, excavations in 1912 found it consisted mainly of sandstone rubble and burnt earth with some C14 and C17 potsherds. Documentary sources suggest a date for the motte of c.1307. King rejected this as entirely natural.

This site has been described as a;
Timber Castle.
The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Earthworks remains.
