Harswell, Everingham

Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as; Herssewell in Spaldingmor.

In the civil parish of Everingham.
In the historic county of Yorkshire East Riding (Modern Authority of East Riding of Yorkshire, 1974 county of Humberside).

Medieval moat, now filled in; possibly the site of a fortified house as a licence to crenellate was granted in 1247 to Salvayan (Le Patourel). The moat was seen as an earthwork on 1940's aerial photography, but is plough - levelled on more recent photography. Emery writes licence to crenellate granted to Gerard Salvayn in 1303. 1303 is the 31st year of Edward I reign, 1247 is the 31st year of Henry III reign. I think Le Patourel has made an error here and mixed up the kings

The confidence that this site is a medieval fortification or palace is Possible.
Nothing visible remains.

A Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1303 Oct 20.
