Mottes, Moats and ringworks in Bedfordshire
Beauchamp Wadmore revisited
David Baker
Some problems raised by Bedfordshire castle and castle-like sites are reviewed against the background of Beauchamp Wadmore's pioneering study of 1920. These include the identification of mutilated or indeterminate earthwork sites and proposals that some have Danish origins, the distribution of sites in relation to landholding and settlement patterns, the subsequent use of sites originating in the Norman period, and their prospects for survival as monuments and for future research.
