An Introduction to Field Archaeology as Illustrated by Hampshire
J. P. Williams-Freeman
Now a very old book dating from 1915 but still of outstanding quality. For the modern student of castles the value of the book is not just the historical interest in the devlopement of archaeology but the very fine drawings and descriptions of minor earthworks, some of which will now be much altered by deep ploughing. The central chapters are tours through Hampshire which read like very good walking guides. I doubt any modern footpath guide can match them for interest and amusement.
