The Mottes in the Vale of Montgomery

David James Cathcart King

C.J. Spurgeon

This article describes in detail several small mottes east of Montgomery. It notes the close association of these very small 'blockhouse' mottes with pre-Conquest settlements. To quote the article "This gives us a perfectly homogeneous group, just what one would expect if one of the earls had decided to settle his waste land with peasantry and that type of small military tenant whose way of life is one of he mysteries of the Middle Ages."
