DANBY CASTLE The first castle was built in the 11th century on high ground at Castleton by the de Brus family who also built Skelton Castle. Stone from the first Danby Castle was used at the beginning of the 14th Century to construct the present palatial castle which dominates the Esk Valley. It was unusual in having a projecting tower in each corner. The castle dungeon is still intact. It is now part of a farm. Photos Garry Wilson's History of Danby Castle
